About this course

Students gain advanced knowledge of several three literatures in their original languages in a theoretically and historically informed context, and from an interdisciplinary and multicultural perspective. Students graduate with the qualitative and quantitative skills necessary for professional research and teaching in comparative literature, and related disciplines world literature, critical theory and the humanities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) or Master’s degree (or equivalent) and demonstrate advanced proficiency
  • (three years coursework minimum or equivalent) in at least 1 or 2 languages in addition to the applicant’s native language.
  • 550 on the TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) or 80 on the TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) is the minimum eligibility for admission
  • IELTS score of 7 is minimum eligibility for admission.

How to Apply

UC Davis requires academic records from each college-level institution you have attended. You will be instructed to upload scanned copies of your transcripts after you have submitted your online application. 

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
It is highly recommended that applicants take the General GRE no later than December. 

Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required to complete the application for admission. Letters may be from professors, employers or others who have knowledge of the applicant's academic qualifications or personal characteristics.  All Recommendation Letters MUST be submitted electronically via the UC Davis Application system.

TOEFL Scores

The minimum scores required for admission to graduate study at UC Davis are:

550 on the TOEFL paper-based test (PBT), or
80 on the TOEFL internet-based test (iBT)
TOEFL scores expire after two years. Scores that are older than two years will not be accepted by UC Davis.
