About this course

Programme Learning Outcomes

  • Can use the terminology and concepts required for a basic understanding of the Earth Sciences.
  • Can recognise the common rocks and minerals; can explain the rock cycle; can describe the main geological structures and processes; can use plate tectonic theory to explain geological phenomena.
  • Has a sufficient understanding of geology to be able to teach the earth science componentsoftheHongKongDiplomaof Secondary Education curriculum (for teachers).
  • Has a sufficient understanding of the geology ofHong Kong to interpret the 1:20 000 Geological Maps and explain observations at key field localities in the context of the regional geological history.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree with First or Second Class Honours in any subject. They are advised that only people with a genuine interest in Geology should apply for the Postgraduate Diploma in Earth Sciences.

Programme Structure

To be eligible for award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Earth Sciences, a student shall complete 30 credits of which 21 credits are from the four Core Courses and 9 credits are from Elective Courses.

  • GEOS7011 Advanced geology of Hong Kong (6 credits) OR
  • GEOS7033 Geology of Hong Kong (6 credits)
  • GEOS7021 Geological fieldwork I (3 credits)
  • GEOS7035 Intermediate geology (6 credits)
