About this course

Master of Science program provides advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in a range of specialised scientific fields, through lectures, workshops, projects and directed study. Students can extend their knowledge in their chosen field or develop an understanding of specialised fields in which they have little previous knowledge.

Statistics is the scientific application of mathematical principles to the collection, analysis, and presentation of numerical data. Statisticians contribute to scientific inquiry by applying their mathematical knowledge to the design of surveys and experiments; collection, processing, and analysis of data; and interpretation of the results. Statistical methods can be applied to a variety of areas, including biology, economics, engineering, medicine, public health, psychology, marketing, education, and sports. Theoretical and practical courses offer students experience in the use of popular statistical and data analysis packages. The program covers all areas of modern statistics and equips graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to embark on a career as a professional statistician. Major areas of study are applied and theoretical statistics and probability theory.

Academic Requirement:

 For Australian students:

 An applicant must hold:

  • Statistics field: Bachelor of Science with statistics major.
  • UQ or equivalent GPA of 5.5 or above on a 7 point scale.

 For International students:

 An applicant must hold:

  • Statistics field: Bachelor of Science with statistics major.
  • UQ or equivalent GPA of 5.5 or above on a 7 point scale.
  • IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6. Study Abroad and Incoming Exchange students are only required to meet the overall score (eg 6.5 IELTS or 87 TOEFL or 64 PTE( Pearson Test of English )).
  • TOEFL (Paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language): 570 (5.0 in TWE (written), and 54 in reading & listening).

English language requirement:

  • IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6.
