Eligibility Criteria

The Master's programme Physics and Astronomy is open to:

  • Applicants with an academic Bachelor's degree in (Applied) Physics, Astronomy, or a comparable discipline
  • Applicants with a UvA Bachelor's degree in Beta-gamma with a Physics major

Additional requirements for international students: International applicants must fulfill additional general entry requirements set by the UvA Faculty of Science, regarding academic background, academic average and proficiency in English.

In the case that the Bachelor's is not in Physics/ Astronomy/ Astrophysics, the appropriateness of the level of Phyiscs knowledge of the candidate is subject to the judgement of the Programme Manager.

Course Modules

The AMEP programme is organised into three study paths:

  • Emergent and energy materials
  • Soft matter
  • Atomic quantum physics

Mixing study paths is no problem at all. The programme director and other teaching and research staff are happy to advise on course choices.


The AMEP programme comprises the following compulsary courses:

  • Big Issues in Emergent Energy Materials (6 EC)
  • Big Issues in Atomic Quantum Physics (3 EC)
  • Big Issues in Soft Matter (3 EC)
  • Statistical Physics and Condensed Matter Theory I (6 EC) or Statistical Mechanics of Soft Matter (6 EC)
  • Academic English (3 EC)
  • Academic Skills (6 EC in total)
  • And the following electives:
  • Bose Einstein Condensates (6 EC)
  • Photovoltaics (6 EC)
  • Soft Condensed Matter and Biological Physics (6 EC)
  • Superconductivity (6 EC)

These courses are supplemented by a set of free-choice electives, from AMEP and/or other Physics tracks, such as Theoretical Physics and Physics of Life & Health.
