About this course

An inspiring scientific environment where scientist work in a stimulating interdisciplinary setting on the cutting edge between physical geography, ecology, hydrology and environmental chemistry, combined in the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED)

IBED offers students a wide range of brand new and state of the art facilities (E-science labs including GIS, Remote sensing and geo-ecological modelling, Soil- and environmental chemistry as well erosion labs) to enable them to let their work meet the latest scientific standards.

The Master programme Earth Sciences consists of three different study tracks:

  • Environmental Management
  • Future Planet Ecosystem Science 
  • Geo-ecological Dynamics

Eligibility Criteria

Students are eligible to apply if they have a Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences, or in Future Planet Studies combined with a major in Earth Sciences, or an (international) equivalent. Admission with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or Computer Science is also possible with proven interest in the field of ecosystem science under certain conditions.

All students go through an admissions procedure in which gaps in the students' knowledge and skills are identified. If necessary, students must be willing to study extracurricular course material, depending on their background, before starting the track.

Course Modules

  • Environmental Management: The track 'Environmental Management' concentrates on interdisciplinary training how to manage the geo-ecosystems of our planet.
  • Future Planet Ecosystem Science: The interdisciplinary track 'Future Planet Ecosystem Science' allows you to face the grand challenges within human-ecosphere interactions on our Future Planet.
  • Geo-ecological Dynamics: The track 'Geo-ecological Dynamics' focuses on in depth scientific training.
