About this course

Business is evolving more rapidly than ever before. The challenges are more complex, the stakes are higher, and the players are increasingly global. The only constant today is change, and Columbia Business School prepares its students not just to navigate change, but to use it to create new opportunities.

Courses at Columbia Business School are taught both by the School’s stable of 150 full-time faculty members — thought leaders whose research is transforming the way business is conducted across the world — and by more than 100 adjuncts — practitioners from a wealth of industries who, because of the School’s symbiotic relationship with New York, can take the subway uptown to teach a class on their lunch break.

The School’s comprehensive core curriculum builds the foundation necessary for success in any field, while electives offer insight into specialized areas of expertise. Versatile programs like Master Classes, the Individual, Business, and Society Curriculum, and Columbia CaseWorks all approach business education in new ways, and the School’s cluster system encourages students to learn not only with, but from, their peers.

Beyond the classroom, the School’s more than 100 student organizations, its remarkably accessible alumni network, cutting-edge research centers, and countless events all work in tandem to help students rewire their brains for success amid uncertainty.

Eligibility Criteria

The basic requirement for admission as a graduate student is the bachelor's degree received from an institution of acceptable standing. Ordinarily, the applicant will have majored in the field in which graduate study is intended, but in certain programs preparation in a related field of engineering or science is acceptable. The applicant will be admitted only if the undergraduate record shows promise of productive and effective graduate work.

Course Modules

Our Full-Time MBA Program is designed to be completed over four terms (2 academic years). The curriculum consists of 18 credits of required core coursework, and a minimum of 42 credits of elective courses. No transfer credits from other institutions may be applied toward the MBA degree.

Students who exempt out of core courses replace them with electives to fulfill the MBA requirement of 60 credits of graduate-level courses taken in residence at the School in four terms of study. Fifty-four of these credits must consist of in-classroom business courses.

Students may count a combined maximum of six credits of Independent Study, Cross-Cultural Seminar, Global Business Project, and graduate-level courses from other Columbia schools toward the MBA degree.

While students generally register for 15 credits per term, full-time residence at the Business School is strictly defined as a minimum of 12 credits. Students are permitted to take up to 18 credits per term, and may graduate with more than 60 credits.

A failed core course must be repeated; a failed elective must either be repeated or replaced by another.
