About this course

This BioE Program is interdisciplinary in that it is not a standalone academic unit like most departments or schools at Georgia Tech. Rather, eight different academic units from the Colleges of Engineering and Computing make up the program.

However, the BioE Program provides the degree requirements for students accepted into the program. This approach allows a flexible, integrative, and individualized degree program that enforces depth and breadth in coursework, a solid bioengineering research experience, and yet is reflective of the disciplinary background of the student's home school. Importantly, the BioE Program provides research opportunities for students with any participating program faculty, allowing tremendous diversity and flexibility for research topics and advisors.

BioEngineering is the merging of engineering with biological and medical science in the study of complex living systems (human and non-human). BioEngineering research at Georgia Tech focuses on the development of innovative or improved physical and mathematical concepts and techniques that may be applied to problems in medicine and biology, including the fundamental study of biological phenomena and the development of new medical devices.

Eligibility Criteria

The minimum GPA requirement for high demand majors (Computer Science and Engineering) is 3.3 on a 4.0-grade scale. The GPA requirement for all remaining majors is 3.0 on a 4.0-grade scale.

Multiple GPA reviews are completed as part of the holistic review process.  An overall GPA review includes coursework taken at all previous institutions (domestic and international). Math and lab science GPA reviews include calculus level and higher math and lab science courses.

Applicants are expected to complete each admission-required course sequence (English, mathematics, lab science) with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher. Mathematics and/or lab science courses that do not satisfy Georgia Tech degree requirements may not be included within GPA calculations.  Lab sciences courses require three (3) hour lecture and one (1) hour lab components.

There is a “no grade forgiveness policy” as part of the transfer application review.

Repeat course grades where a “C” grade or higher has already been earned are not included within GPA calculations. Repeat course grades due to withdrawal (WF) or failing grades (below a C grade) are included within GPA calculations.

SAT Subject Tests

  • Students are not required to take SAT Subject Tests for admission to Georgia Tech. However, if you have taken the exams, you are welcome to submit your scores to our office for consideration with your application. You may also earn course credit for Chemistry and/or English subject tests.

AP Scores

  • AP test results that are submitted electronically at the time of application may be reviewed for freshman admission. However, you are not required to submit exam results when you apply. If you are admitted and choose to enroll, we would encourage you to submit all results at that time for possible course credit.

IB Scores

  • IB results are used to award course credit for incoming students. For students attending an IB school that does not award letter or number (0-100) grades, we will use the IB results to evaluate the academic performance for admission.

TOEFL/IELTS

  • Students who are non-native English speakers are encouraged to take the TOEFL or IELTS exam.

Evaluating your Test Scores

  • All freshman applicants must take the SAT and/or the ACT with writing.
  • We accept both tests and have no preference between the two.
  • We use your highest section scores in the evaluation process.
  • Each time you submit new scores to us, we will update your record with your highest scores.
  • Our bottom line is that testing is only one part of our holistic review, and we want students to be able to put their best foot forward.

Our advice for completing this portion of the application

  • Take both tests! Many students feel more comfortable with one testing format over the other, resulting in higher scores.
  • Send us your scores when you take the test – don’t wait! Your scores may fluctuate with each test instance, but we will only use the highest section in our review of your application. Delaying sending us your scores could put you at risk of missing an application date or being excluded from information sent from our office.
  • Keep us informed. If you plan to retake a test after your submission date, tell us on your application.
