About this course

This program equips students with the theoretical knowledge, skills and professional attributes necessary for careers in physiotherapy. Physiotherapists treat the reactions and responses of the body to injury, disease or abnormalities in development. They are key health professionals in the prevention of injury.

Students who choose the Master of Physiotherapy Studies  will graduate with an integrated body of knowledge and the clinical abilities, problem-solving skills and professional attributes to provide competent physiotherapy service in a wide range of contexts. Students will also commit to self-learning and professional growth, and be able to adapt to change and respond to challenge. They will gain extensive practical experience in hospitals and clinics, both off and on campus.Students commence in this program with an introduction to the fundamental knowledge relating to professional issues, communication, physiotherapy examination and treatment techniques.

In the subsequent semesters, students will be exposed to the theoretical, practical and research aspects of musculoskeletal, cardiothoracic and neurological physiotherapy before undertaking supervised practice to develop their core competencies and ethical and professional behaviours necessary to function as a physiotherapist.

Careers:

Graduates work in hospitals, rehabilitation units, community health centres and in schools. They may work in private practice offering treatments to a full range of patients or specialise in areas such as sports physiotherapy, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, paediatrics, obstetrics, orthopaedics or other fields of particular interest.

While this degree may be accredited by an official industry accreditation body in Australia, completion of the degree may not result in graduates receiving automatic accreditation. Students can contact the relevant registration body for details of any conditions for accreditation.

Eligibility Criteria

Academic Requirement:

 For Australian students:

  • An approved degree (other than physiotherapy) in a field such as physical or biological sciences or allied health.
  • Entry is competitive based on GPA.
  • University level or equivalent courses are required in human anatomy, human physiology, psychology and statistics. 

 For International students:

  • An approved degree (other than physiotherapy) in a field such as physical or biological sciences or allied health.
  • Entry is competitive based on GPA.
  • University level or equivalent courses are required in human anatomy, human physiology, psychology and statistics. 
  • IELTS overall 7; reading 7; writing 7; speaking 7; listening 7.Study Abroad and Incoming Exchange students are only required to meet the overall score (eg 7 IELTS or 87 TOEFL or 64 PTE( Pearson Test of English )).
  • TOEFL (Paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language): 570 (5.0 in TWE (written), and 54 in reading & listening).

English language requirement:

  • Students are required to provide evidence of immunisation against blood-borne transmissible viruses or other diseases, as outlined further in the School's immunisation schedule.
  • Students must obtain at the commencement of the program and thereafter hold for the duration of the program, a current Blue card and First Aid Certificate (including CPR).

For National students:

  • This program starts in summer semester and is a full two years in duration, including a second summer semester.
  • Domestic students in the MPhtySt may be eligible for income support and should contact Centrelink.
  • This program may have inherent requirements that need to be met prior to undertaking placement.
  • Students are required to provide evidence of immunisation against blood-borne transmissible viruses or other diseases, as outlined further in the School's immunisation schedule.
  • Students must obtain at the commencement of the program and thereafter hold for the duration of the program, a current Blue card and First Aid Certificate (including CPR).
