About this course

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Organizational Dynamics is an advanced graduate degree designed for individuals who want to demonstrate applied scholarship beyond a master’s degree but who are not ready to, or may not wish to, apply for a doctoral program. The Master of Philosophy in Organizational Dynamics can serve as an important step in future PhD study preparation or simply as a way to deepen engagement with the topics studied in a previous master’s degree.

You will work closely with an academic advisor to design a Master of Philosophy degree curriculum suited precisely to your interests and goals. You may also select from the five concentrations available to the Master of Science in Organizational Dynamics students.

Course Modules

Master of Philosophy degree requirements
If you already hold a Master of Science in Organizational Dynamics degree from the University of Pennsylvania, the Master of Philosophy in Organizational Dynamics requires completion of six course units and a Master of Philosophy capstone paper or project. For master’s degree holders from another program at the University of Pennsylvania, determination of the required number of courses will be based on the nature of the previously completed degree and coursework.

If you completed an equivalent graduate degree from another institution, the Master of Philosophy in Organizational Dynamics requires completion of eight course units and a Master of Philosophy capstone paper or project.

Master of Philosophy capstone
You will choose a member of the Organizational Dynamics faculty to work with as your capstone paper or project advisor. The role of your capstone advisor is to provide mentoring, help you define the scope and content of your paper or project and to read and evaluate your final work.

The format for the capstone may vary. It may be a professional portfolio of competencies acquired; professional/organizational applied research; an evaluation or synthesis of a topic of interest; or another approach selected with your advisor.

How to Apply

Admissions and Eligibility
The Master of Science in Organizational Dynamics (MSOD) program is designed for mid-career professionals from a variety of backgrounds and requires no specific prerequisite courses. The degree is ideal for those who wish to complement their MBA or another professional or graduate degree, as well as those who do not need the traditional foundational curriculum of an advanced business degree. Students come from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and professional enterprises including corporations, public institutions and nonprofit organizations, as well as from professional fields such as law, education and healthcare. However, for your admission to the program, it is necessary that you have a strong academic background and well-articulated objectives for participating in the program.

Successful applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited US institution and are expected to have achieved a 3.0 GPA in previous academic work, or explicitly address why they expect to be able to do so in their graduate degree program. In addition, candidates must have completed at least five years of full-time, management-related, professional work. Standardized tests such as the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) are not required when applying for the Master of Science in Organizational Dynamics program.

International applicants should make sure that their degree is the equivalent of a four-year degree in the US, and must demonstrate English proficiency via their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores.

Application materials checklist
Since all required supporting documents are submitted through the online application system, hardcopy material other than official transcripts or letters of recommendation will not be accepted.* Please urge your recommenders to submit their letters through the online system.

Applications must contain all of the following in order to be considered complete:

  • Completed online application
  • Current résumé or curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Nonrefundable application fee
  • Application essays, listed below
  • Unofficial transcripts from each post-secondary school attended uploaded through the online application system
  • Three letters of recommendation (details below)
  • English proficiency test scores for international students

 Letters of recommendation
Each applicant will submit three letters of recommendation. Letters should come from individuals in a position to evaluate your professional and/or academic work, such as a supervisor or professor, and who know of your desire to enter the Organizational Dynamics program. Recommendations may be submitted online (preferred) or by mail. For online recommendations, please follow the instructions in the Recommendations section of the online application.

Standardized test scores
International applicants whose first language is not English must also submit their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores to demonstrate English proficiency. Please note that the TOEFL is rarely waived; therefore, we encourage applicants to take the test to avoid delays in completing the application. The minimum TOEFL scores required for admissions consideration are: 100 (iBT), 250 (CBT) or 600 (PBT). The TOEFL must be sent from ETS using the institutional code 2986. To locate a testing site near you or schedule an exam, visit the TOEFL website. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is also accepted and the minimum score for consideration is a 7. You may upload a copy of your IELTS test to the standardized test score section of the application.

Upon review of an applicant's file, the Admissions Committee reserves the right to request TOEFL scores.

International transcripts from institutions outside the United States
If your post-secondary credentials are from an institution outside the US, you must submit all post-secondary credentials (undergraduate and graduate) to World Education Services Inc. (WES), a third-party verification agency, for a course-by-course evaluation.

World Education Services Inc. (WES) must complete a course-by-course evaluation of all post-secondary credentials. The course-by-course evaluation should include the comparability level of your education and list each of your courses along with the equivalent U.S. marks and credit. Please select the WES basic course-by-course evaluation (with GPA and course levels) and request that WES send your evaluation to Penn College of Liberal and Professional Studies Admissions. The school can be found by searching the University of Pennsylvania and then selecting College of Liberal and Professional Studies. The evaluation becomes an official academic record and sole property of the University upon its receipt.

Note: Fees is calculated per course unit
