About this course

The Master of Mineral Resources provides professional postgraduate education in areas that impact directly upon the efficient technical, scientific and commercial management of the minerals industry.Exploration geophysics is the practical application of geophysical methods (such as seismic, gravitational, magnetic, electrical and electromagnetic) to measure the physical properties of rocks in the Earth's surface. These skills are of vital importance to the exploration industry where these measurements are used to identify and constrain economic deposits of ore, coal and hydrocarbons.

This program encompasses a range of mineral and petroleum exploration activities. Industry recognises the need for resource exploration and development professionals to keep up with modern developments in the science. Each area is coordinated by a principal supervisor with an applied research background, and also involves industry associates. Candidates can follow either a broad stream entirely within the scheduled subjects or may follow specialist streams of geophysics or geology to enhance employment opportunities.

  • Society of Exploration Geophysicists

While this degree may be accredited by an official industry accreditation body in Australia, completion of the degree may not result in graduates receiving automatic accreditation. Students can contact the relevant registration body for details of any conditions for accreditation.

Academic Requirement:

 For Australian students:

To enrol in the program, a student must hold :

  • Bachelor degree in geological science, geological engineering or related field, or Graduate Diploma in Mineral Resources. UQ or equivalent GPA of 5 or above.

 For International students:

To enrol in the program, a student must hold -

  • Bachelor degree in geological science, geological engineering or related field, or Graduate Diploma in Mineral Resources. UQ or equivalent GPA of 5 or above.
  • IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6. Study Abroad and Incoming Exchange students are only required to meet the overall score (eg 6.5 IELTS or 87 TOEFL or 64 PTE( Pearson Test of English )).
  • TOEFL (Paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language): 570 (5.0 in TWE (written), and 54 in reading & listening)

English language requirement:

  • IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6.
