About this course

This program provides graduate training in all aspects of health economics, meeting the clear need for comprehensive programs in Australia and internationally. A joint initiative of UQ's School of Economics and School of Population Health, this program is designed for people intending to work in the health sector. The program offers students the opportunity to develop strong analytical skills and is a qualification which may further career opportunities in national and international health agencies.

This highly specialised program provides critical insight into the complex economic issues in health sector administration, and the economic impacts of decisions. Students may take elective courses in analytical techniques, including applied econometrics, public economics, health finance, epidemiology, business and economic decision techniques, benefit-cost analysis, and health and development.

Careers:

Graduates can expect to find employment as health economics managers in pharmaceutical companies, health departments, private health facilities or government and development agencies.

  • International Health Economics Association

Eligibility Criteria

Academic Requirement:

 For Australian students:

  • An approved Bachelor degree with a GPA of at least 4.50 on a 7 point scale. An approved degree is a Bachelor degree in the discipline of economics, business or commerce; or a Bachelor degree containing at least four courses in any three of the following areas: microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics and mathematics; or the graduate certificate in economics from this university with a GPA of 4.5.

 For International students:

  • An approved Bachelor degree with a GPA of at least 4.50 on a 7 point scale. An approved degree is a Bachelor degree in the discipline of economics, business or commerce; or a Bachelor degree containing at least four courses in any three of the following areas: microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics and mathematics; or the graduate certificate in economics from this university with a GPA of 4.5.
  • IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6.Study Abroad and Incoming Exchange students are only required to meet the overall score (eg 6.5 IELTS or 87 TOEFL or 64 PTE( Pearson Test of English )).
  • TOEFL (Paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language): 570 (5.0 in TWE (written), and 54 in reading & listening)
