About this course

The two-year Master of Fine Arts degree offers students training in advanced artistry and perceptive abilities for the visual arts, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramic sculpture, photography, video, or electronic arts for careers as practicing artists. Individual studio space on campus is provided.

Eligibility Criteria

Admission to the M.F.A. program in Art Studio requires:

  • An undergraduate degree in any field or discipline.
  • Demonstrated skill in the field of studio arts: a comprehensive body of individual and selfdirected,
  • ambitious, thoughtful, creative artwork that exhibits the promise of development and growth.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • 550 on the TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) or 80 on the TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) is the minimum eligibility for admission
  • IELTS score of 7 is minimum eligibility for admission.

Core Courses (64 units total):
• ART 290 Seminar (20 units total - 4 units each for 5 quarters)
• ART 299 Individual Study (30 units total)
• ART 299D Comprehensive Project (12 units total)
• ART 291 Seminar - Critical Evaluation (1 unit)
• ART 292 Seminar - Comprehensive Qualifying (1 unit)


Elective Courses (8 units total):

Two Upper Division or Graduate Classes (4 units) in any subject on campus with a total of 8 units.

UC Davis requires academic records from each college-level institution you have attended. You will be instructed to upload scanned copies of your transcripts after you have submitted your online application. 


Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
It is highly recommended that applicants take the General GRE no later than December. 


Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required to complete the application for admission. Letters may be from professors, employers or others who have knowledge of the applicant's academic qualifications or personal characteristics.  All Recommendation Letters MUST be submitted electronically via the UC Davis Application system.
