About this course

Extraction and processing of mineral and energy resources generates a range of environmental impacts that must be managed and minimised to meet global demand for these resources. Growing global population coupled with increases in urbanisation and industrialisation ensures an ongoing demand for skilled professionals in environmental management in mining. This field of study will introduce students to the unique environmental challenges presented by mining environments and strategies for managing these environmental impacts.

Employment opportunities:

Graduates will be well-equipped for careers in environmental management related to the mining industry in private organisations and government, including:

  • Industry - Onsite management roles:
    • Land rehabilitation
    • Monitoring and management of water quality and quantity
    • Restoration of flora and fauna communities
    • Management of greenhouse gas and dust emissions
    • Development of site-specific management strategies
  • Consultancy:
    • Development of management plans for industry
    • Monitoring and auditing of management plans
    • Identification of opportunities to go beyond `best practice' management strategies
  • Government:
    • Policy implementation: monitoring compliance with regulations
    • Policy development: formulation of environmental management regulations and guidelines for industry

Eligibility Criteria

Academic Requirement:

 For Australian students:

  • Bachelor degree in any field or Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management, with UQ or equivalent GPA of 4.5 or above on a 7 point scale.

 For International students:

  • Bachelor degree in any field or Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management, with UQ or equivalent GPA of 4.5 or above on a 7 point scale.
  • IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6.Study Abroad and Incoming Exchange students are only required to meet the overall score (eg 6.5 IELTS or 87 TOEFL or 64 PTE( Pearson Test of English )).
  • TOEFL (Paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language): 570 (5.0 in TWE (written), and 54 in reading & listening)

English language requirement:

  • IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6. 
  • Study Abroad and Incoming Exchange students are only required to meet the overall score (eg 6 IELTS or 87 TOEFL or 64 PTE( Pearson Test of English )).
