About this course

Information and communication technology (ICT) is increasingly being used in healthcare and an understanding of ICT and its applications is now essential for healthcare professionals. This program provides knowledge and hands-on skills in e-healthcare and is suitable for both health professionals wishing to enhance their understanding of and ability to work effectively with ICT, and for graduates wishing to pursue careers in healthcare.

About the Centre for Online Health:

The Centre for Online Health is a leading research institution with experience in telepaediatrics, teledermatology, telehomecare, home palliative care and teleneurology. The web-based flexible learning program is designed for a diverse cohort (particularly busy healthcare professionals), assisting them to upgrade their knowledge and skills in e-healthcare.

Students will have an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the types of technology and equipment used in healthcare delivery and interact with experts in research in the field. The programs are designed to involve graduates in planning and implementing e-health research, encouraging them to identify a research domain most suitable to their own profession.

The program explores the influence (both advantages and potential challenges) of technology in:

  • clinical practice
  • healthcare delivery
  • education
  • administration
  • research

 

Students will critically evaluate developments in e-healthcare, analyse their effectiveness, and consider possible future trends.

Careers:

Graduates should be able to use sophisticated information technology & information management techniques to improve quality of healthcare. Employment opportunities in exist in:

  • private health care organisations
  • hospitals
  • clinics
  • managed care organisations
  • state & federal government.

Positions include:

  • telehealth coordinator
  • systems & infrastructure manager (telehealth)
  • manager or coordinator of telehealth and e-health services

Eligibility Criteria

Academic Requirement:

 For Australian students:

An applicant must hold

  • an approved degree in the same discipline, and
  • have completed 6 months full-time work experience in a telehealth or related setting, or
  • have completed a tertiary program in e-Health or clinical telehealth; or
  • an approved degree in a different discipline, and
  • have completed 18 months full-time work experience in a telehealth or related setting, or
  • have completed a tertiary program in e-Health or clinical telehealth approved by the executive dean; or
  • the Grad Cert or Grad Dip in e-Healthcare from UQ (or equivalent).

 For International students:

  An applicant must hold

 

 

  • an approved degree in the same discipline, and
  • have completed 6 months full-time work experience in a telehealth or related setting, or
  • have completed a tertiary program in e-Health or clinical telehealth; or
  • an approved degree in a different discipline, and
  • have completed 18 months full-time work experience in a telehealth or related setting, or

International students may not undertake the program on campus at UQ on a full-time basis. They may only study externally from their home country and will not be eligible for an Australian student visa.
