About this course

This program is strongly differentiated from typical development-related programs in that it has a strong emphasis on quantitative techniques in econometrics, benefit/cost analysis and operations research. It is also unique in offering students training in how to model the economy as a complex, evolving system, which is highly appropriate in understanding economic development. Graduates will have training in economic modelling and statistical techniques, in addition to the key analytical frameworks in the field of economic development. Given the strong quantitative emphasis of the program, care has been taken to offer a range of electives of a less quantitative nature, including courses offered by four other Schools. The elective list is extensive enough to allow study in fields such as: health; environment; innovation and competition policy; international economics and politics; quantitative techniques for project appraisals.

Study options:

Graduates will have the opportunity to progress to the following programs:

  • Master of Advanced Economics
  • Doctor of Philosophy

Careers:

Graduates will have comprehensive skills directly related to employment in the private or government sectors in companies, agencies and departments involved in international development, consulting, project management, aid agencies and infrastructure planning. Graduates may be recruited into a variety of roles such as consultant, policy advisor, project officer or economic analyst.

Professional memberships:

Graduates may be eligible for membership with the following professional bodies:

  • Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society
  • Development Studies Network (ANU)
  • Economic Society of Australia

While this degree may be accredited by an official industry accreditation body in Australia, completion of the degree may not result in graduates receiving automatic accreditation. Students can contact the relevant registration body for details of any conditions for accreditation.
