About this course

The MA program in Social Science offers an interdisciplinary curriculum for those seeking employment in business, government, mass media, and education, as well as those who subsequently wish to pursue a research program in one of the social science disciplines. The taught program is designed to provide the necessary skills required for social science research and a broad spectrum of analytical perspectives for a critical understanding of a variety of issues and phenomena in the modern world.

Eligibility Criteria

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants should have obtained a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized university or equivalent.

Language Requirements

Most courses are taught in English. Students who wish to enroll in courses in which Chinese materials are used and/or Chinese is the teaching medium must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the Chinese language. Generally,

English requirements for applicants whose first language is not English and whose degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not English are as follows:

  • for Chinese (TCSL) Concentration applicants: IELTS ≥ 6.5 (all sub-scores ≥ 5.5), or TOEFL iBT ≥ 85 (Writing ≥ 20/30)
  • for English (TESL) Concentration applicants: IELTS  ≥ 7.0 (Writing ≥ 7.0, and other sub-scores ≥ 5.5), or TOEFL iBT ≥ 100 (Writing ≥ 27/30)

Course Modules

Program Requirements

  • MA students must take eight courses (24 credits) and obtain a graduation grade average (GGA) of 2.850 or above as required of all postgraduate students at the University. Of the eight courses, students are required to take two foundation courses (6 credits), four required courses (12 credits), and two elective courses (6 credits).

  • SSMA5020 Quantitative Methods in Social Science

Required Courses

Designed specifically for the MA students, the required SSMA courses cover disciplines in sociology, psychology, economics, and political science. Students are required to take courses from one or more of these disciplines. For every semester, the Programs Office will announce a list of courses to be offered by the Division.
