About this course

American Studies at the University of Amsterdam is an interdisciplinary, English-language one-year Master’s programme. The programme attracts students from many academic backgrounds: history, cultural studies, literary criticism, media studies, and the social sciences. The lecturers are not only specialised in the field of American studies, but also come from an extremely broad range of academic backgrounds, thereby ensuring that the courses are highly interdisciplinary.

In the Master's in American Studies students look at the United States' international presence, examining the way it affects other countries and cultures politically, economically, militarily and culturally. Also explored are the different ways in which American and European intellectuals analyse America, as well as their respective attempt to grasp the critical differences between American and European traditions. In addition, students examine America as a cultural presence in the European mass media, including film, radio, television, photography and advertising.
