About this course

The Master of Arts (Counselling and Guidance) programme is fully certified by the Singapore Association for Counselling as a training programme for Registered Counsellors. Upon completing the programme, students are expected to be competent in various areas including major counselling theories, evidence-based practices, case documentation, ethical and legal issues, and research and programme evaluation skills in counselling. Students are trained to adopt an integrated approach to counselling, which draws on knowledge from various counselling theories, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, and multicultural therapeutic perspectives.

Eligibility Criteria

Students must have a good undergraduate degree, preferably with honors, from a reputable university. Preference will be given to those with a first degree in psychology, at least two years of relevant work experience and who are able to pursue the programme full time.

Course Modules

The MACG programme is a professional degree that comprises 42 Academic Units (AUs). Students may opt to complete the programme under the Practice Track or Practice-Research Track.

The Practice Track consists of 12 courses of 3 AUs each (inclusive of 10 core courses and 2 elective courses) and clinical instruction (2 blocks of practicum of 3 AUs each).

Students who wish to strengthen their skills and knowledge in research may opt to do a Research Project (3 AUs) in place of an elective course, subject to approval.

How to Apply

The application documents must be arranged and submitted in the following order:

  • Hardcopy printout of the Application Form, signed at the Affirmation Section and affixed a Passport-sized photograph on the Application Form
  • Photocopy of your National Registration Identity Card (NRIC)(front and back). If you do not have an NRIC, please provide a copy of your passport information page(s)(containing the passport number, name, etc.)
  • Completed Photo Form
  • Completed Coursework Supplementary Form
  • Coursework Supplementary Form (Applicable to all Coursework programmes. To submit one Supplementary Information Form for each programme applied.)
  • Photocopy of Degree Scrolls / Certificates (Master’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Postgraduate Diploma in Education, etc.)
  • Photocopy of Transcripts (Master’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Postgraduate Diploma in Education, etc.). Please note that:
  • A transcript of detailed academic results is required from each university or college attended. The transcript results should show marks (wherever possible) and grades obtained in each module. If the transcript is in a language other than English, please provide an official English translation as well and the modules in the translation should be listed in the same order as that of the original transcript
  • If a complete transcript is not available, please include a complete photocopied set of examination results for every semester
  • TOEFL / IELTS Score  (Applicable to graduates of universities with non-English medium instruction)
