About this course

The Master’s in Ancient Studies is designed as a multi-disciplinary programme. It offers a unique combination of historical, literary, and archaeological approaches from which the student can make a choice.

Ancient Studies is an accredited degree programme of Classics and Ancient Civilizations. After successful completion of this programme, students receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in Classics and Ancient Civilizations and the title Master of Arts (MA).

  • The Master’s in Ancient Studies is open for application to all students with a Bachelor’s diploma from the UvA or from another accredited university, in:
    • Greek and Latin language and culture
    • Latin language and culture
    • Ancient Studies (VU)
    • History*
    • Archaeology*

*will be considered under special circumstances.

  • English language requirements: New Master's students should be able to speak, read, write and understand English at advanced academic level.
  • Application documents: To apply for this Master's programme students need to upload all of the application documents.

Students choose one of the following specialisations:

  • Archaeology and ancient history.
  • Ancient Thought: from Plato to Augustine.
  • Ancient Studies: with ancient Greek.
  • Ancient Studies: with Latin.
  • Neo-Babylonian and neo-Assyrian.

Programme structure

The Master's programme Ancient Studies comprises 60 ECTS credits:

  • 42 credits for core courses, tutorials and electives.
  • 18 credits for a thesis project.
