About this course

The role of communication and media in society is the central theme of the Bachelor's in Communication Science. In this programme, students study the content, use and effects of communication and of various forms of media, from radio and television to newspapers and the internet.

The Bachelor's in Communication Science is a three-year programme of 180 ECTS or credits (1 ECTS credit = 0,5 US credit). The programme is taught in English. Knowledge of the Dutch language is not required.

Course Modules

First Year Courses: Most of the first-year is devoted to theories of communication. Students attend courses such as:

  • Introduction to communication science
  • Methods of communication research and descriptive Statistics
  • Corporate communication
  • Entertainment communication
  • The media landscape

The second and third year: During the second and third year students deepen and broaden their knowledge of communication science. The programme contains the following courses and topics:

  • Political communication and journalism: The focus is on the information function of (news) media. 
  • Persuasive communication: Students learn which models and theories are useful for the design of campaigns.
  • Communication ethics: This course includes an orientation in the ethical aspects of professional activity.
  • Communication advice and research in practice: One learns how communication-advice is used in companies and institutions.
  • In-depth courses on the methods and statistics of social research, such as inferential statistics and qualitative research.
  • Electives, Topics (electives within the field of communication science) and an (research) internship.
  • A graduation project in which students conduct their own research and write a thesis.
