About this course

What is Global Select?
As one of the world’s leading universities, the University of Edinburgh has a long tradition of welcoming international students who can demonstrate the high academic standards we naturally demand of all students seeking a coveted place on one of our undergraduate degree programmes. Although the College of Science and Engineering is no exception in applying these admission principles, we realise that this could result in the exclusion of highly talented students from certain countries whose school leaving qualifications are not yet formally recognised by the University as a basis for direct entry.

Successful students gaining entry to the College through the Global Select route will join in Year 1 alongside their direct entry counterparts, pursuing exactly the same study regime and enjoying just the same privileges as fellow undergraduates throughout their standard 4-year degree programme.

First year Global Select students will benefit from additional support to improve their English language skills and fill any knowledge gaps in their chosen area of study identified by the pre-entry assessment exercise that all Global Select candidates are required to undertake.

Eligibility Criteria

Entry requirements:
This programme is designed for international students who have not previously been able to access our undergraduate degrees, due to the fact that their school-leaving qualification was not recognised by the University of Edinburgh.

This innovative programme is integrated into the first year, so unlike many other foundation programmes, will not mean an extra year of study.

After successful completion of the first year, students will have the opportunity to transfer into a variety of different degree programmes, within their chosen subject area.

Applications should be made through UCAS in the usual way. Further information is available from the College of Science & Engineering.

Course Modules

What you will study:
This does not lead to a General Engineering degree; however, it does allow students to defer their choice of discipline until the start of the second semester of teaching.

Students entering through this route will make this decision in conjunction with their personal tutor.

Year 1
Students will take Engineering, Mathematics and an additional Academic English for International Students course which has been specifically designed for Science & Engineering students.

Year 2
After successful completion of the first year, students will have the opportunity to transfer into a variety of different programmes, within their chosen subject area.

Year 3
See above

Year 4
