Program outcomes

  • Acquire fundamental knowledge in mathematics and science on which civil engineering research and practice are based
  • Understand fundamental principles of engineering science relevant to civil engineering disciplines
  • Acquire an ability to conduct experiments, analyze and interpret results, and appreciate the importance of experimental data in establishing empirical relationships and parameters for analysis and design
  • Acquire an ability to apply modern engineering and IT tools effectively and efficiently for engineering analysis, design and communication
  • Develop an ability to identify and formulate civil engineering problems, and propose feasible solutions with an appreciation of their underlying assumptions, uncertainties, constraints, and technical limitations
  • Develop technical competency to design civil engineering components and systems, with an understanding of the principles behind the design methodologies
  • Develop an appreciation of the breadth of civil engineering, and acquire basic knowledge in several disciplines to enable effective performance within a multidisciplinary work environment
  • Obtain in-depth knowledge in at least one major area of specialization within civil engineering
  • Develop an ability to communicate and present ideas effectively, including oral, written, and technical writing skills, and to function effectively within and among teams with a variety of backgrounds and interests
  • Recognize the importance of seeking further specialization within civil engineering and the need for life-long learning

Eligibility Criteria

Academic requirements

  • SAT/AP, GCEAL/IAL, IB or other qualifications.
  • American Patterned System (SAT/AP): SAT Reasoning Test with a minimum combined score of 1800 or above (in one sitting) or ACT plus Writing with a minimum composite score of 27 or above (in one sitting), and with three SAT Subject Tests, each with a minimum score of 600 or with Advanced Placement in three subjects, each with a minimum score of 3
  • Note: For students using New SAT, please consult the concordance tables provided by the College Board which show the equivalent score on the old SAT for a score on the new SAT
  • British Patterned System (GCEAL/IAL): At least 3 Passes in AL subjects
  • International Baccalaureate (IB): Completion of IB Diploma

Course Modules

All undergraduates will complete the same set of requirements regardless of their major discipline of study. They are expected to complete the majority of the common core credits in Year 1 and 2. The 6 credits of English Communication are to be taken in Year 1.
