About this course

The unprecedented mining and infrastructure development in Queensland, and Australia as a whole, is generating huge demand for Mining Engineering graduates. This includes specialisation associated with mining engineering in Geomechanics, incorporating soil mechanics, rock mechanics and engineering geology.The Mining and Geotechnical Engineering major is supported by a consortium of global companies. Students are taught by experts working in mining and geotechnical engineering and benefit from UQ's close links with these companies.

The Mining and Geotechnical specialisation consists of the major in Mining Engineering, which is taken in common with all mining engineering plans, supplemented with additional specialist study and project work in Geotechnical Engineering. The program is designed to equip qualified mining engineers with the skills to approach to complex, multidisciplinary problems concerning earth materials including roads, landslides, piled building foundations, excavations, spillways, tunnelling and mining.

Employment opportunities:

There is a high demand from Mining and Geotechnical Engineering Consultants, Mining Companies, and Civil and Mining Contractors, and graduates can work in design, operation, management, research and consulting in Australia and overseas.

Eligibility Criteria

English language requirement:

  • IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6. 
  • Study Abroad and Incoming Exchange students are only required to meet the overall score (eg 6.5 IELTS or 87 TOEFL or 64 PTE( Pearson Test of English )).

Academic Requirement:

 For Australian students:

  • OP/Entry rank:6/89
  • Queensland Year 12 or equivalent English, Mathematics B, plus one of Physics or Chemistry. Both Chemistry and Physics, and Mathematics C are recommended.

 For International students:

  • Queensland Year 12 or equivalent English, equivalent qualifications of Mathematics B, plus one of Physics or Chemistry. Both Chemistry and Physics, and Mathematics C are recommended.
