About this course

Biotechnology applies scientific and engineering principles to living organisms in order to produce products and services of value to society. It is used in processes ranging from cheese production, brewing, and wastewater management, through to drug design and gene therapy.

This program examines microorganisms, plants and animals in the context of the discovery, understanding, improvement and development of viable products or activities. The discipline combines elements from many areas such as molecular genetics, microbiology, immunology, physics, chemistry, engineering and mathematics.

Microbiology is the oldest core discipline of biotechnology and one in which The University of Queensland has a great depth of knowledge. As an area of study it holds established employment opportunities in diverse bioindustries.

Work in biotechnology cuts across several industrial and service sectors including health, agriculture, aquaculture environment, forestry, law and commerce. The Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours) can lead to career paths in the following areas:

  • Government agencies, Research Institutes and Universities.

Eligibility Criteria

English language requirement:

  • At least 6.5 overall and a minimum of 6.0 in each sub-band of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent test.
  • Study Abroad and Incoming Exchange students are only required to meet the overall score (eg 6.5 IELTS or 87 TOEFL or 64 PTE( Pearson Test of English )).

Academic Requirement:

  •  For Australian students:

           1)OP/Entry rank:9/81
           2)Queensland Year 12 or equivalent English, Mathematics B plus one of Chemistry or Physics.

  •  For International students:

          1) Equivalent qqualifications of Queensland Year 12 or equivalent English, Mathematics B plus one of Chemistry or Physics.

          2)At least 6.5 overall and a minimum of 6.0 in each sub-band of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent test.
