Philosophy offers not only its intrinsic interest, but also valuable transferable skills that can be applied to other academic disciplines and endeavours. Study in Philosophy enhances communication skills, critical reasoning skills, and general problem-solving skills, in addition to helping you organize and unify information that you have learned in other courses.You can select a Major, Minor, or Honours degree in Philosophy; a Major in History and Philosophy of Science; or a Combined Major with other programs.

Eligibility Criteria

You can come directly from secondary school (including, for example, Gymnasium, International Baccalaureate or British-Patterned Education) or may transfer to UBC after one or two years at another accredited institution. International Students in the Faculty of Forestry can apply for the Co-op work placements or our exchange programs in the faculty.

Course Modules

Students must take at least 42 credits (and no more than 60 credits) in Philosophy, subject to the following requirements:

First Year
6 credits from PHIL 100 (6), 101 (3), 102 (3), 120 (3), 125 (3), 150 (3), 211 (3), 212 (3), 260 (3) or Arts One are recommended.

Second, Third, and Fourth Years
Second, third, and fourth years of the program require that students complete:

15 credits from: PHIL 220, 230, 240, 330, 340
6 credits of 300-level history of Philosophy from PHIL 310, 311, 314, 315
an additional 18 credits from third- and fourth-year Philosophy courses (excluding PHIL 400, 401) to provide a total of at least 30 third- and fourth-year credits (including the third-year credits required above)
PHIL 491 (3): Seminar for Majors in Philosophy.
