About this course

The master’s degree includes 12 courses, with at least one on campus.

  • Get started. You begin by completing three admission courses from the program curriculum. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your commitment and ability to perform well as a Harvard student
  • Apply to the program. While you are completing your third admission course, you submit your application. We have application periods in the fall, spring, and summer.
  • Continue your studies, online and on campus. As you progress through the program, you choose from courses offered on campus or online, in the fall, spring, or summer. To fully experience Harvard, you are required to take at least one course on campus as part of your degree. Short, intensive on-campus options are available.
  • Complete your capstone project. You apply knowledge and skills obtained in the program to complete a significant journalism project under the direction of a professional in the field. You'll conduct an in-depth investigation of a single topic and emerge with a portfolio of publishable work.

Eligibility Criteria

English Proficiency

You must prove English proficiency for admission to a degree program at Harvard Extension School if you did not earn a four-year bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, or the United Kingdom.

Undergraduate Degree Accreditation

You need a US bachelor’s degree from a college or university that was regionally accredited at the time of attendance, or its foreign equivalent, with a degree conferral date that precedes enrollment in graduate-level courses taken with us.

Prior Graduate Degree

If you already hold a graduate degree, you may earn a master’s degree provided the two degrees are in different fields.

If you possess an advanced or graduate degree in the field of business, management, or finance (e.g., MBA, MA, MSc, MAS), you are eligible to pursue our ALM degree in either Management or Finance only if your prior degree's content is significantly different than the ALM. If you possess or are pursuing this type of degree from another institution, we strongly advise you to confirm your ALM eligibility prior to registering for courses. Please send your inquiry along with a copy of your transcript to [email protected] for evaluation. The Admissions Office makes all final determinations regarding eligibility.

International Credits and Degrees

If you earned degrees outside the United States, you must have the credentials verified by a specific third party. Canadian degrees earned at institutions where English was the primary language of instruction may require credentials verification upon the Admissions Office review. The Admissions Office needs to receive an official evaluation in a sealed envelope from that agency.

English language requirement:

  • IELTS: 7
  • TOEFL-IBT: 100
  • TOEFL-PBT: 600

How to Apply

STEP 1: DETERMINE DEGREE ELIGIBILITY

English Proficiency

You must prove English proficiency for admission to a degree program at Harvard Extension School if you did not earn a four-year bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, or the United Kingdom.

Undergraduate Degree Accreditation

Note special criteria for select degrees

Software engineering, digital media design, and information management systems degree applicants

You must pass the test of critical reading and writing skills or complete the required expository writing course for your program before submitting an application. (Other programs require this test earlier in the admissions process, typically for enrollment in an admissions course.)

Management and finance applicants

You may earn the HBX CORe (Credential of Readiness) certificate, for credit or noncredit, in addition to completing either Organizational Behavior or Business Rhetoric at Harvard Extension School with a grade of B or higher and also achieving a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in all applicable degree courses. To participate in HBX CORe, you need to submit a separate application through the HBX website. Not all students are accepted. While CORe does not count for credit toward your Extension degree, even if you register for the credit version of it, it will prove your Harvard readiness. It does not replace the economics or accounting degree requirements for the Management field or the principles of finance or accounting degree requirements for the Finance field, so you will still need to complete these courses after admission to the program. HBX CORe scores expire after 3 years from date of issue. Apply to the degree program only after you have been notified of your passing grade in HBX CORe, as it may take several weeks to receive your transcript.

STEP 2: COMPLETE THREE ADMISSION COURSES

Take the required admission courses first before all other degree requirements and apply as soon as possible. Degree requirements change over time, and you can lose degree credit or delay your graduation if you postpone submitting your application.

Grade Requirements

  • Earn the required cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 (B) or higher in all Harvard courses taken before admission.
  • Earn at least a B in each of the three required admission courses. All admissions courses must be taken at the graduate level

Course Expiration

Professional field applicants (includes all software engineering, information management systems, digital media design, all four biotechnology fields, finance, journalism, management, mathematics for teaching, museum studies, and sustainability): If a course can count toward your degree program, you have five years from the term in which the course was completed to apply to that degree program using that course as an admission requirement. Otherwise, it expires, and you must repeat it or take a different course that fulfills that same admission requirement.

Liberal Arts field applicants (includes Anthropology and Archaeology; Biology; Clinical Psychology; Dramatic Arts; English; Foreign Literature, Language, and Culture; Government; History; International Relations; Literature and Creative Writing; Legal Studies; Middle Eastern Studies; Psychology; Religion; Visual Arts): If a course can count toward your degree program, you have 10 years from the term in which the course was completed to apply to that degree program using that course as an admission requirement. Otherwise, it expires, and you must repeat it or take a different course that fulfills that same admission requirement.

Proseminar course: You are ineligible to apply if you fail to earn the minimum grade of B or higher in two attempts of the required proseminar course—each with a different instructor—for a master’s degree. The proseminar grade cannot be older than two years at the time of application. If it is, you must retake the course and register for a section with a different instructor, if possible. For repeated proseminars, both grades will apply to your cumulative GPA unless a grade was earned more than 10 years ago. See Academic Standing for information about how repeat courses affect your GPA.

STEP 3: PREPARE AND SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION
